This is a strange one, RED are to announce the up and coming Scarlet camera about 3 hours after Canons announcement. It may be a tactical move by RED to ingest the Canon specs before announcing their own specs…who knows.

Discussing this with “He who should not be named” said that RED should bring their news 1 day forward as it will be lost with Canon’s news, I agree as RED have nothing to gain by taking this to the wire.

Having been working in the video business since 1988 I have amassed a great amount of knowledge of both the kit and production values over the last 30 years.

  1. I find it interesting that RED will be releasing a camera with a 2/3 inch chip. I’ve spent my entire career shooting on 16mm film and 2/3 inch chip video cameras. There is simply not enough DOF availability when one needs it with smaller sensors. Of course 2/3 inch cameras have a place (ENG etc) but they’ve been around for 30 years and I can’t think of anyone who is “clambering” for such a camera righ now. I would speculate that maybe 1/3 or 1/2 inch camera users who have or haven’t switched to S35mm sensor cameras would probably overlook the Scarlet. Of course I could be completely wrong and should have bought RED shares, but as they say, only time will tell.
