6th April 2004, Richard & myself were called to the Queen Mothers Hospital to film the birth of Hana. I was producing my 4th diabetes video on Pregnancy and Diabetes. Both using Sony PD 150 DV camcorders.

I had never witnessed a cesarian birth before so I did not know what to expect. The surgeon was a young lady with bags of confidence, the anaesthetist was a confident young doctor who went through all his procedures before administering a spinal anaesthetic which numbs you from the waist downwards.

The next stage is the surgeon cutting into the “bump” to expose the baby and delivering wee Hana to her mum and dad.

I was amazed at how much “blood” was coming out the wound and asked the surgeon after the procedure why she was not panicking. Her answer was have you ever cut your finger and put it in a glass of water. Its the same principle, its not a lot of blood but amniotic fluid mixed with a small amount of blood.

Mum the next day with baby Hana being interviewed for my video on Pregnancy & Diabetes. Back in 2004 we had two ways to present footage for patients…VHS video or DVD. The better quality was DVD. Richard and I will never forget our experience in that operating theatre.

I am to the left of frame filming mum and dad, Richard is filming the baby. This was a frame from a wide shot we had running in the corner of the theatre. Sadly the Queen Mother’s Hospital is no longer at Yorkhill as it was demolished a few years ago. We recon wee Hana will now be 22 years old, if anyone knows the family can you please DM or email me with their current phone numbers.
