Pro video blog…Produced by Philip Johnston DoP/Editor

After watching a video on YouTube on the new IOS 17 features Apple have finally fixed the variable white balance (WB) problem. This has been a bug bear of mine for years now as I do prefer to use the inbuilt Apple video app rather than the footery Pro Cam.

IOS 17 is not available till next week but you can download a beta version to try all the new features in advance. What they have done is lock the WB before shooting begins.

Start with SETTINGS, then CAMERA

In RECORD VIDEO scroll down to the bottom of the page till you find LOCK WHITE BALANCE

Some interesting replies to this blog post and none other than Mr Philip Bloom…

“Be nice to set it to a preset! The Sony Xperia app is a joy for this. Manual or auto for ISO, shutter, WB and manual focus. It’s operates like a camera. There’s a basic mode for muppets too!

Apple has ignored the white balance problem for years on the iPhone and this is the first attempt at giving us a better overall filming experience. I agree with Philip how difficult would it be to have WB presets like you have on a photographic camera.

Having been working in the video business since 1988 I have amassed a great amount of knowledge of both the kit and production values over the last 30 years.
