I was out yesterday with my Insta 360 1″ filming my dogs. I have attached a permanent Manfrotto 577 Video QR Adapter to a Ruff Wear dog harness.

With the stabilisation on the Insta 360 I was hoping for some interesting results as I also wanted footage of our 9 month old pup Missy.

Out we went to the local park, lovely sunny day and sent Candy our bearded collie down the [path with the Insta 360 on her back. I actually checked the footage back in the field with my iPhone and all was fine.

Got back to the house to discover the morning footage on Canday’s back was gone ! While the later boom pole footage was still on the card.

Back for take 2 on the afternoon walk this time I did not check the “mounted” footage and stopped the recording. Re mounted the camera on the boom pole and recorded the rest of the walk. Once again I get back to base to discover no footage on the mounted shot…again !

By this time both dogs had been fed so I could not repeat the same walk as you should not exercise a dog on a full stomach.

I sat and thought about it and the only fly in this ointment was I had ejected the card before the morning walk and it flew across the desk onto a wooden floor. Its a micro SD card which is usually a tough wee character but I think something had got broken inside which meant the harsh running of my dog may have caused the card to malfunction (Only a guess).

I replaced the card for the re-shoot today and all went fine. The other card is in the bin.

Meanwhile…

About two weeks ago I attended my good friend Alastair’s wife funeral. We had discussed the funeral the day before and I had decided on the day to film it with my Insta 360 1″ making the whole procedure less intrusive.

Mounting my RODE Wireless GO 11 onto the Insta 360 and the transmitter onto the lectern. The Insta 360 running in 6K 25p mode was on a stand then mounted on the boom arm about 6 feet high. After 30m the camera gave me an over heat warning and shut down. I have to say this was in the middle of a Scottish Autumn rainy day with the indoor temperature at about 18 degrees. Not warm but fortunately I noticed this and grabbed my iPhone 14 PRO max out my pocket to film the last 5 minutes. Fortunately the RODE transmitter has the great feature of recording internally so I only had to match up the last 5m of footage.

This was not a paid job so nothing was lost but it’s not the first time I have read of this cameras shortcomings filming continuously.

Having been working in the video business since 1988 I have amassed a great amount of knowledge of both the kit and production values over the last 30 years.

  1. I have a Fuji X-H1 which does something similar. After roughly 10mins or shooting (even at 1080) the camera just stops recording the video stream – but does continue to record the audio stream. So you end up with a clip that just goes black at some point but with an audio stream. There is no warning on the camera – it looks like it’s recording just fine. We’ve been stopping and starting the camera after about 5-8mins of recording. Admittedly, I don’t have the power grip that Fuji does say is best for recording video. In some testing, an external power bank also seemed to solve the problem but I’m too nervous on paid shoots to push it and keep on reverting to stopping and starting the camera to ensure all is well. I’d guess that on your Insta 360 that 6k setting is pushing its limits a bit?
