People all across the planet have reported hearing a strange humming/droning noise at the dead of night usually in their bedrooms like my wife and myself heard last evening.
This is a bit off topic but as I am in an industry that makes a living out of recording sound and vision I feel obliged to report this weird phenomena that has occurred a second time over the last two years.
I was in the edit suite which is right next door to our bed room when my wife came in and asked me what the humming noise was, it was about 1.30am. I switched off all the equipment and could still faintly hear a low, almost mains hum in our bedroom, it is officially reported to be between 40-80 Hz.
I decided to see if the noise was only in the house or outside so we drove round the local area in Burnside, Rutherglen stopping and listening, strangely the noise could also be heard a quarter of a mile up the hill from my house facing south but going the same distance north, nothing.
I looked for the obvious train line maintenance or any kind of construction but once again nothing, the same happened about a year and a half ago and we went through the same exercise.
This strange low frequency hum has also been reported from Canada and England all with the same story only noticeable at night, we don’t have any overhead pylons anywhere near us so it remains a mystery.

Is mother earth being mined under our very feet ?
A recent question… “Anyone have any ideas why it’s mostly heard at night and in the bedroom?”
Editor : Night time is simple…a lot less noise from cars, birds etc its probably in every room but you are more in tune with your bedroom as you spend a third of your life in it and more importantly in the same place i.e.. your position in your bed remains a constant so your ears are highly tuned to that particular space.
“The Hum is a mysterious and untraceable sound that is heard in certain locations around the world by two to ten percent of the population. Historically, the area that has been most affected by the Hum is the United Kingdom, where reports have been frequent since the early 1970s. In the United States, Hum reports date from the early 1990s, with the two most publicized locations being Taos, New Mexico, and Kokomo, Indiana. The source of the Hum has never been located. The Hum does not appear to be a form of tinnitus and may not be an acoustic sound. More than just a noise, the Hum is also capable of manifesting as vibrations felt throughout the body and is often accompanied by a suite of physical symptoms that includes headaches, nausea, and pain in the ears. Analysis of the largely anecdotal data that are available at the present time suggests that the most probable explanation is that some people have the capability to interpret radio transmissions at certain wavelengths as sound. It is well established in the scientific literature that people can hear electromagnetic energy at certain frequencies and peak power levels. Previous studies have found that a subset of the population has an electromagnetic sensitivity that is significantly greater than the mean. Several hypotheses are considered and discussed as possible sources of the Hum. These include cellular telephone transmissions, LORAN, HAARP, and the TACAMO aircraft operated by the US Navy for the purpose of submarine communications. “

Here is a BBC radio program on this topic…
Glenn Marden “Anyone wishing to create the exact tone/frequency as to what they hear, can create and download an MP3 file here: http://onlinetonegenerator.com/
Maybe show to others. Have one headphone in, and use slider on tone generator to align sound until you then hear the hum equal in both ears. For me it was 36Mz.
Taken from the Largs and Millport news 30th December 2020
A Largs (A seaside town in the West of Scotland) history buff believes he has found a credible explanation for the infamous hum that has plagued the town for more than 40 years.
Robert Cathcart believes the electrification of the local railways line and how it interacts with the surrounding landscape is to blame.
He says he made the discovery, which he believes has never been put forward before, while researching the Largs hum for a timeline project.
Robert said: “I was trawling the net in recent weeks to find when the hum started as I wanted to add it to the town’s timeline we are creating from the Largs History Group, which I run.
“When I went to put it in I noticed that Largs railway was electrified at the same time and I thought it was a bit of a coincidence.
“So I looked into the description of the hum as measured by university studies, the frequency of the current and where it’s been heard from.”
Robert believes the noise comes from the hum of the railway tracks bouncing off the hills and echoing, creating a small noise only in certain areas of the town.
He said: “I believe that the noise is an interference pattern resulting from an almost inaudible electric hum interfering with its own echo from the hill behind Cathcart Road.
“This creates pockets where the crests of sound are doubling up and becoming audible, even though you cannot hear anything when you stand beside the railway.
“Poor shielding, cable problems and proximity to magnetic fields cause hum, which may be inaudible at source but when crossing its echo every second wave doubles in volume.
“The people hearing it are mainly between the hill and the railway line, which also supports the electrification theory.”
Although there have been other ideas put forward by locals over the years, Robert believes his explanation stands up to scrutiny.
He said: “My theory definitely explains why it’s heard in certain locations and measured loudest just to the east side of the main road.
“I’ve never read any of the theories where people have mentioned windmills and activity at Hunterston.
“To me any source of sound could be pointed to, walked towards and pinpointed, except of course an interference pattern.
“It beats me how 10,000 people could wonder and debate it for 30 odd years and still not agree on the cause. I just wanted to throw this theory out there.”
Hope this maybe useful to others.

I’ve had tinnitus for decades. What I’ve heard all of my life with tinnitus is a rushing noise, like when you listen to a seashell or a radio not tuned in properly.
What I hear from time to time here in the states is about a 60 cycle hum, not like my tinnitus. Maybe there are different types of tinnitus as to which frequency one hears, but this is what I experience.
It’s horrible when one hears this 60 cycle hum here in the states. In my area I’m pretty sure it’s related to the underground power lines encased in cement laying on the limestone we have here.
Have a look at this article here from the UK daily Mail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3156778/Can-hear-wind-farms-hum-electricity-Researchers-claims-human-hearing-better-thought.html
“Can YOU hear wind farms? Researchers prove human hearing is better than thought and ‘turbine phenomenon’ is real
German study found humans hear sounds from around 8 hertz
This is a whole octave lower than had previously been assumed
Wind farms produce something known as infrasound at 16HZ
Wind energy sector has previously claimed noise was inaudible”

Hi Carol, Is the Hipnotherapy helping. This is what my GP said I should try. As yet I have not.
Still different some days. Louder others. Cheers Pat
I have been for 2 sessions and it is mostly trying to reframe my reaction to the Hum. I am a bit sceptical as she is not saying anything to me that my husband hadn’t said. Like think of the good things in your life, it can’t hurt you, there’s no such thing as silence, stop focusing on it, relax….
All are hard to do when it is all you can hear over TV and radio and computer fan.
I think I am waisting my money (_wrong attitude I know) but I need to feel like I am doing something about it… To haon some control
Hi Carol Its good to hear about your time with hypnothery.
I still use my MP4 and go to the beach to get away. I am lucky I have that not far away. Some nights are worse. But sleep eventually. I try as you say not to hear – kid myself – Keep trying to keep calm. so it goes on Take each day at a time—
Hi Carol i beg to differ with your Hypnotist.. My blood pressure has been badly affected by the stress and noise and lack of sleep for over 5 yrs i look as if i have aged terribly this past 6 months. This sort of noise DOES affect your health I am having to move from where i live to get away from it. I have tried meditation and relaxation therapy which is great while im away from flat once im home stress levels go up again !!!!!! Oooooh for one whole day of peace and quiet 🙁
Patricia where are you please?
Hi Sue I live in New Zealand Tauranga area Papamoa Beach Bay of Plenty North Island.
Dare I say The noise hasn’t been soo bad this last few days. Worse Sunday and Tuesday of late.
Cheers
Hi Patricia Barton. I live in New Zealand too, Tawa Wellington. I have heard the hum every night for the past 2 years. I thought everyone heard it but my partner doesn’t. I came to the conclusion myself a while back that it was to do with electricity don’t know why i thought that it just came to my mind one night. I decided tonight i would google it and came across this article that fits the description of what i hear only at night when im in bed. Just thought i would connect with you as we both live in New Zealand and funny too i trained as a clinical hypnotherapist back in the nineties and self hypnosis has not helped to diminish or make the hum go…
Hi Paulette, I’m Pleased to hear someone in Nz hears this sound too. I have days when I need to go to the beach taking lunch and a book. There is another person who also is in Nz- Happening in other counrties too. Some days are worse than others Humming, engine running different sometimes. But very much heard in the bedroom some nights. I have anoise machine, I put on running rain to hear adifferent noise. Plasanter to hear and do in time go to sleep. Slao MP4 player is good to have. My husband nor neigbours hear this sound. Very annoying when it lasts for hours into the night.
Hi Paulette. As I live in Upper Hutt, so not so far from you, I thought I’d let you know my experience. I have commented previously, but as you’ve only just found this Blog, you may not have seen my comments. I started hearing the Hum in March 2014. It drove me to distraction for the best part of a year and I too went through all the possibilities before finding out I wasn’t the only one. I had the Electricity Dept come over and check the wires around my flat, I had the Drainage people check etc etc. Found nothing of course! Then I found the Blog when an employee from the Power Bd said she thought that others had complained about the same thing. The only thing that has helped me is taking Cherry Juice before I go to bed. I sleep so much better now. Still have the occasional nights when I wake a lot, but don’t have that awful “sleep deprived” madness that was starting to take me over. The Hum is still audible day and night, but have only heard it REALLY loud half a dozen times in the last 3 months or so. You have probably figured it out by now, but in case not, the Hum is infrasound and is heard inside because your walls/floor/ceiling act as an amplifier. If you stand in your open doorway, it disapates considerably. Good luck.
I noticed a strange low humming noise that happens at night. I had to close my sliding door so I did not have to listen to it anymore. Its not high pitched like when your ears ring. Its deep slow and sorta sounds like woom woom. Or like the noise you may hear in a movie when a person is scanned by a machine. Or like what would be put in a movie as the sound of a hovering ufo. I tried to rule out the sound at first thinking maybe my fan mixed with the way i had my head positioned was making the noise (even though my fan is on all day). but as soon as i closed my slider it stopped. when i went back a few times and opened my door i could hear it again. I live in such a small town that there is no mayor, no factories and such that could be causing the noise. I live in Massachusetts.
I live in Glasgow, Scotland and began to notice the “hum” a few months ago. Always at night and always in the Bedroom. My partner can hear it too, it’s stronger at an outside wall where there was a fireplace (now boarded up). But it can be heard on other walls. I don’t hear it anywhere else, just the bedroom of my flat. Sounds like a washing machine drum starting up, before it goes full throttle, then it stops. It sounds like it’s coming from electric wiring outside but impossible to tell really. Interesting original post came from Rutherglen, i live 3 miles from there! Thankfully it doesn’t keep me awake, if anything it’s quite soothing and helps me to drop off. Still strange though, I;ve lived in this flat for 5 years and it only started about 4 or 5 months ago.
Hello Clara
If you have a smart phone, please, if you want to, download the free app Systems Analyser which lets you know the Hz and dB (the sound and the loudness) of the noise you hear. I’d be interested in your readings. Very best Sue
Clara, I was interested to read that you are in Glasgow too. This annoying hum is taking me down avenues I wouldn’t normally consider such as contacting strangers on the internet to get to the bottom of these noises!
I too am approximately 4 miles from rutherglen, near pollok park.
Do you hear the same noise any place else or just in your flat?
Any ideas what it can be? Is it there all the time?
I hear a hum in my house constantly, over 2 levels and in the attic, which makes me think that it comes from an outside source.
I do not hear it at any other places. I even hear it over the TV, the noise is that deep and resonating.
Any substations or electrical apparatus in your local area?
Best,
Carol
I too hear the droning noise have done at least four years, not every night but most nights. Can hear it now drones stops drones.I live in Upminster, Essex, UK. Sorry but glad other people hear it too extremely puzzled by what it could be, probably satellite dishes. K
Hi
I am so glad I found this site….I started having problems last year (end of september\early october) I was woken by vibration and a high pitch noise in the night, shortly after I became aware of the low pitch drone. The vibration is so aggressive at times my muscles lock and the drone is often so loud day and night that I can hear it over the tumble drier. I have had several people out about the noise/vibration with no joy….basically they politely told me it is the humm! It keeps me awake most of the time, drives me crazy on days I need to be at home and I am at my witts end with it.
So having read all your posts I dont feel I am going mad at last now. Thank you all for sharing.
Hello Sue
Ifyou have a smat phone, load the free app Spectrum Analyzer and measure the noise to see what the Hz and dB are. If you can, keep a log of time, date, measurements and description of the noise and the effect it is having on you. I assume you can hear it over squishy earplugs, you have had your hearing checked and there are no medicines you are taking which can cause it. You need to switch stuff off in the house, see if local businesses are causing it, all the usual stuff. Please report back and also put your location on the world map of hummers. Very best Sue
Hi Sue where do i find the world map of hummers to put my location on it .
This site has got really good this past year.. for years i thought i was the only one that was bothered by this hum. have had to move twice already now thinking of having to move again out of the city where i live I still think it is related to the sky dishes or box in my case which is up in my loft. It feeds all 4 flats in the building i live in. I am the only one that does not use sky and am the only one affected by the noise !!!??? Am gonna download app to record the noise …Thank you for all your help and input on this site very much appreciated 🙂
http://thehum.info/
Please enter your details on the world map for hummers to help identify the areas.
You can use this free app for your phone to identify the Hz and dB of the noise you hear. Please record time, date, readings of Hz and dB and the effect this noise has on you as it is happening. Very best, Sue

Ive heard a sound like a remote controlled buzzing like in a kids toy that’s only way I can describe the sound. It bounces off my bedroom walls. I heard it early hours of this morning but it was outside this time. When the noise comes I feel as if my head is tuning in to something. I cant explain it properly on here.
I’m hearing something too:(
I hear it again tonight (Midlands, UK) it seems more intrusive tonight. I tried recording it and something strange happened i just got all this digital static picked up. I also lucid dream when this noise happens and not the good kind either. If anyone is interested in the video email me at kanejames94@gmail.com
Interesting you are the first person to comment on lucid dreams…
The noise has been quite bad this past week.. something is def going on.:(
I heard this sound when I was staying with a friend for about a year (2013-2014), in Laurel, MD. We were in a 2nd level condo, with some exterior walls, and some interior; one enters from a hallway, like a hotel. The only place I could hear it, was in the bedroom or living room. I could not hear it in the hallways, or when I exited the building, even at night. When I moved to Oceanside, CA, I thought, I will be so glad not to hear that sound. But it’s here! I’m now living in a single story house, and this sound is easily heard each night, and sometimes in the morning. I have a computer in my room, and I play rain sounds, or ocean waves, all night, just loud enough to overcome the drone. This sound reminds me of an airplane with propellers, and we have a municipal airport very close by, but I don’t know if there are propeller planes revving up all night, every night.
The sound is not as fast as the sound propellers make when they are turning at their full speed. It’s a much slower, and very low sound, and has a beat to it. It’s annoying.
Interesting. The BBC did a report on exactly this quite a long time ago. I seem to remember the report was inconclusive at the end, but they did do some proper scientific measurements in the home of a sufferer.
He was the only person who could hear anything, but the measuring equipment did pick up a peak at 17Hz in his room – which got louder outside and had shifted slightly in frequency by the time the measurement was redone. (Which seems to negate any thought it may have been induced pickup from electrical equipment in the home.)
The theory at the time was down to high pressure gas pipes laid underground, acting in a way similar to “organ pipes”. The gas at the outside of the pipe gets slowed by friction relative to the centre flow, which sets up standing waves. The frequency will change according to the flow through the pipe.
So you had a man who could hear a noise, there was proof there was a sub-sonic frequency measured, but the real mystery was why no one else could also hear it.
I’m a little sceptical of talk of using such as an I-phone app to do meaningful measurements at such frequencies. Is the microphone in it capable of such a low frequency response? 50Hz and harmonics, maybe, but down below 20Hz?
I live in Alberta, Canada. I’ve heard the strange noises for the past 4 months in my new home. Everytime I hear it, the time Is either 4am or 5am. No later.
I haven’t heard it every night, only 3 different nights. I’ve been frightened by it, having gone to my parents bedroom waking them up and asking them what they think the noise is, but it stops everytime I get into their room. I’m 17, so I took a drive with my brother one night to look in the area for any construction or absolutely anything, but we found nothing. And then heard the noise about 200 m from our home. Weird stuff, keeps me up when it happens, I just close the window now. I’ve been told “Oh its just a plane” but I know what a plane sounds like. This is not that. This is a much louder, buzzing siren almost, if I were to compare, its to the likeness of a chain saw without the rumblings (the sound the chainsaw makes when making contact with a tree). The sound always lasts a few seconds (around 10) then slowly turns down to stop. Then starts up again. Anyway, it happened last night. I couldn’t help but do a little research.
Well, it’s been a long time since I have commented on here – about 18 months or more. After suffering the droning hum for so long it just suddenly went. I didn’t want to believe it at first but I can’t begin to describe my relief when it didn’t return. Then 2 months ago it started all over again. Same time each morning starts at 6.24am lasting around an hour and again in the evening, like before. A continuous pulsing drone sound and I honestly cried because I realised the nightmare had begun all over. I truly believe it affects my health, my sleep, my sanity!! It suddenly stopped again last week. It’s not gas pipes, tinnitus – which I already have – nor the local planes at the airport. Even the local dockyard here in Southampton has it’s own amount of noise but this is not an outside source nor is it a normal sound. Shutting windows doesn’t help at all. The frustration continues.
Oh Lin, I feel for you! It does affect sleep, sanity and health. I’ve been hearing the hum here since Feb 2014 with only occasional spells of quiet. It was all quiet on Monday 19th October there, and I wanted to stay in the house to enjoy the peace but had already made plans to go out (I’m always looking for ways to escape the house). The relief was instantaneous!
My family try to understand but I get so annoyed and ratty at it. It is affecting my mental health. It is torture.
Imaging hearing the same tone continuously, never wavering for weeks on end. The scary thing is I keep having flashes of suicide but I think it is just my brain looking for an escape route…. I am determined to fight it and find the source but it is an infuriating process. If not then I will have to move house!
Yours dementedly….. C
This humming noise is extremely annoying and there is no escape from it anywhere from inside my house. I live in Frankston, a southern suburb of Melbourne Australia. I reported the noise to my local council and they sent their health representative to investigate. He could just barely make out the sound but street traffic noise does that. Late at night when its quiet, that’s when it becomes unavoidably noticeable. My friends/visitors have also confirmed they hear it too so I guess I’m not losing my mind! There is a cell communication tower constructed less than 100 meters from my home that seemed to have coincided with the humming noise for the last 6-7 years but not 100% certain if it is related. After visiting my neighbors, I can hear the sound just as loud in their homes but you can only hear it while inside any of the houses, not outside. The sound is like hearing the hum/drone of an amplifier or a car engine on idle parked outside on the street. I also hear it while inside my car parked in the driveway but nothing as I exit. Although it is easy to drown it out, it is hard to focus on the noise or detect its source direction. There have been rare occasions where the sound subsides but it is usually going 24/7. Maybe it’s time to move…
Strange that no one has mentioned the “smart meter” that is being installed all over the ‘civilized’ world. The Humming started for me soon after one was installed without my permission or knowledge. Soon after is when the Humming started with me…and always in the middle of the late night hours. Wakes me up several times a night. All I got from the Electric Company was a few words of Unbelief and the insinuation that it must be caused by Age. Yeah !
Hi I have had this sound /hum for 10 mths now. Tauranga New Zealand. I have heard that others near Wellington have this problem too. Mondays seem to be worse for the hum. Other times engine noise, or a whine– can not find where it is, but has been picked up by the council sound meter. He could not hear anything but this proved it was not within me!!! I try to sound it out. Even sleep with MP 4 player and also have a sound machine, sound of rain suits me. Lovely when not around but I go down to the beach Cannot hear it once out of my area. I live on a Retirement Village no one else hears what I hear, We can not move away. Just try to distract myself, keep calm. Herbal tea at night, and tablets sometimes. Good Luck—-
Hi there. Just wanted to add that I started hearing the Hum in March 2014, and still do unfortunately. However, I didn’t have a Smart Metre put in until this year, so that doesn’t apply in this case! Back to the Drawing Board – which must be VERY LARGE by now!
Carol – thanks for the reply. This sound does drive my literally mad. When I read all the comments on this site it seems like we are all sane people being subjected to these sounds. Whether it’s because for some reason our hearing seems to pick up frequencies others don’t I’m not sure. I think there must be someone out there who has the ability to monitor it and one day give us some answers. Till then, stay strong.
I have been experiencing this weird humming noise coming through my bed room’s walls. It just started recently. It’s happening only during the night, and it stops in the morning. It doesn’t really bother me,however,I find it very creepy in some ways. It’s as if there is something demonic inside the walls, making this noise.Any suggestions, please?
Good to read your comments. I’m in Upper Hutt (north of Wgtn). The Hum is ALWAYS there, however at different frequencies from time to time – sometimes more annoying than others. I find the faster frequency the most intrusive. I too use an MP4 player with a couple of relaxing commentaries and associated background music. I also have a CD player close to my bed with a particularly helpful relaxation music CD (Tony O’Connor’s “Pisces”, in case you want to check it out). I have been taking Tart Cherry Juice just before I retire and have found it really helpful. I don’t get as angry as I used to even when I don’t sleep particularly well. It’s a natural product – check it out. Good luck.
We dont have a smart meter…..
Experienced electrical type of hum last two mornings from 4ish to 6ish in Abu, NM. When walking through house, I feel as though, only 2x, though,I’ve disturbed the wave of whatever is being emitted n passing through the structure of my hm. Any chance this hum is related to ufos?
Thought I’d share something unusual with you all. November the 5th being Guy Fawkes, meant lots of fireworks being let off over several hours late on that evening. After they had finally quietened down, around midnight, there was NO HUM! Not even a whisper of a Hum! Unbelievable! The first time since mid March 2014. That was two nights ago. There were fireworks again last night, but not many. The Hum was back, but barely discernible, and not at all annoying. Anyone have any thoughts about that?
Hi Lynda, I can see where you are coming from. I feel one loud noise does disturb the HUM at times. The nights I have it here a train runs 11 pm and if the wind is in the direction of my home it seems to quieten down for a time. I feel its noise waves coming from somewhere within my area. outside of this it gets better. No remedy as yet. This weekend was better for me thank goodness.
Hi all yes I had a good night Saturday too ( guy Fawkes) it was terrible last night and still here today . Anyone else experience it I live in south east uk
November 11 2015
around 6.30 am was at a supermarket car park in hayes middlesex london uk all of a sudden was a drumming noise in the sky with a after sound of like metal bending this went on for 15 mins wth nothing insight..iam a pilot and have never heard anything like this before.was about to leave when the sound changed it was like the sound of a trumpet and then the drumming again .was in total shock of wht could be had to get to work but this went on for 40 mins…hope i get a explanation..???
I’ve been hearing a barely audible hum late at night and very early AM. Also very faint vibration. I am the only one here who notices it and it has to be very quite. I am in southwestern rural Pennsylvania and thought it maybe due to coal mining though at present I’m unaware of mining activity that close. There are windmills around but I’ve heard this years before the windmills were in place. No underground electrical wires. It sounds like a faint engine and is constant. I’ve heard this since moving to my current house about 20 years ago. Not really bothersome except nobody else can hear or feel it and I wonder what it could be.
After a long period of complete silence the noise has started up again with a vengeeance this afternoon. 16:45 18/11/2015 in Midlothian. Anyone else hearing anything? This is making me feel sick and my head is ringing. It has been completely quiet since 6 November this month. Anyone know if any work is being done at the substations in Midlothian? Kaimes? Smeaton? Longstone? I’d appreciate your comments please. Very best Sue
I have posted before on here 2 years ago. I was getting a low frequency hum at Aminor Bflat 108hz – 122hz ( I measured it with the pirch lab phone app on android) may not have been entirely acurate picking up external sound. It was definitively near and around my bedroom and the hallway near my bedroom. The sound got weaker as I got further away from the bedroom but was still audible to me in other parts of my flat. Not outside not on my balcony. Not at the door to the hallway. . No one else could here it. It stopped after a few months. At the time I was not very well and the lack of sleep due to the sound keeping me awake made my ailments even worse. After it stopped and I did not notice until I realised I was able to get to sleep a few nights later, I started to feel better ohysically and mentally. Has there been any scientific studies done on this? Does anyone know?
Laila – are you in the US? Because if so it sounds highly likely it’s mains electricity related, as the supply there is 60Hz. Hence such as lights flicker (slightly) at 120Hz as there are 120 half cycles/second.
I just wonder if you had a piece of electrical equipment plugged in, and even if switched off, a mains transformer could have been giving a 120Hz audible hum.
AS for why nobody else could hear it, well, maybe they could – but being used to mains hum were able to block it out in a way you weren’t?
If it returns, try turning off all the power in your flat – does that make a difference? If so, turn it back on and then go round socket by socket.
Hi David no i am in north London UK. I did switch of my mains many times but the hum was still there at the same pitch. i do live near a gas station which is at the top of my road. The hum when on for months. made me ill. when it stopped i slowly started to feel better. I may have been particularly sensitive to it shortly after moving in to a new property.
I also tuned my gas supply off to check and the humming continued.
