Pro video blog…Produced by Philip Johnston DoP/Editor

The big news at BVE 2014 is the “soft launch” of the GH4 on the Panasonic Broadcast stand, though pre production models they were good enough to satisfy me this is the way forward.

The OLED viewfinder is to die for, focusing NO PROBLEM…I also had a good look at the new £1400 42.5mm f1.2 Lumix, Leica lens.

42.5mm full pic

This is a picture taken with the 42.5mm f1.2 lens and even at full aperture it’s sharp as a tac.

Two HD Warrior readers looking over the GH4 again no prices though the price will be announced on the 17th March 2014. There was a lot of buzz round the price, my body only of £1500 seems to be a good bet but the SDI adapter may turn out to be overpriced though I did emphasise  to Panasonic the Tascam DR60 priced at £300 is a lot more powerful spec wise, self powered and records to SD card.

Another blog reader Peter came up to say hello…it’s the first place he looks at when he gets to work.

I bumped into Steven and Alison Baxter, Steven is Phil  Baxters brother and the lovely Alison, Phil’s widow was a joy to meet. We were a bit emotional reminiscing about Phil and how he loved these shows, such a sad loss to the industry.

Having been working in the video business since 1988 I have amassed a great amount of knowledge of both the kit and production values over the last 30 years.

  1. Hi Phil. Please come and see us at our Limelite/Comodo stand L06 at BVE where we have launched the amazing new Comodo Orbit Twin stabilised camera rig, which has set Teitter and Facebook on fire today with our simultaneous launch this week in the US. Regards, Tim Haskell

  2. Good to hear the GH4 has a better viewfinder than the GH3. INMHO, the GH3’s viewfinder was definitely NOT “to die for”. Now, I’m patiently waiting for the GH5 – which hopefully WILL record simple good old HD 4.2.2 internally. Not sure 4K will be my thing. Just watched a documentary shot in 4K. Couldn’t stop thinking who badly the makeup looked or how many hairs I could count in the talent’s nose.
Is 4K the next 3D or should we in fact consider 4K as HD was to SD? Only time will tell.
    Love your shirt Philip!

  3. Hi Phil, can you please repost the 42.5mm 1.2 lens photo in full resolution? It’s hard to see the true quality when the image has clearly been resized.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Did the overlay displays on the GH4 OLED disappear after 10 seconds like they do on the GH3 with no way to set them to stay on?

HDW : I don’t know but I will try to get in touch with the rep and find out, I agree it would be better to stay on at all times.
