Over at Sony Rumors is the first leaked picture of the Full Frame 24MP camcorder called the VG900 with rocker switch as seen on the new EA50.
This will be an interesting camera if the rumours are true for one reason it will take a huge amount of sales from the NEX-EA50 as no one is going to entertain an APS-C camcorder knowing Sony is about to release a full frame version.
Sony unfortunately have no one to blame but themselves if the VG900 is indeed legitimate as they are manufacturing camcorders like they are going out of fashion.
We have already seen three PMW cameras in the last four months so its not hard to imagine a full frame EA100 by the turn of the year.
Assuming Sony have done their maths and hopefully reduced moire on this 24MP chip it will start a new race beyond Super 35mm to get an F5 with a full frame sensor to the market before Canon.
Full Frame sensors will give us a whole new level of picture quality not to mention shallower depth of field as seen on the likes of the Canon 5D Mk11.

This for me is exciting. Finally a FF video camera. Of course it will be intentionally crippled but hopefully no moire and a well spec’d viewfinder.
FF offers unique DOF control which has not yet been possible in a video camera body. I value having the option of shallow DOF when I occasionally want it without having to buy a f0.95 lens.
I am really baffled by Sony’s overkill shotgun approach over the past year. FS700, then EA50, then VG30, and now VG900. Three PMW cameras. Plus a bunch of subtly differentiated NEX’s (I’ve lost track) and also the new A99 full-frame video-friendly DSLR (with HD-SDI out, it appears). What the hell is going on? I know these are from different divisions and aimed at different markets, but surely Sony headquarters must have some oversight.
Just received an email from SONY officially launching the A99. I checked the specs on the homepage and there is no mention of HD-SDI out. The official sales launch will be on the 26th of October here in Japan according to SONY’s homepage here in Japan.
I read HDMI out though.
Right, no HD-SDI output on the A99. The Camera Store video tells me it’s actually a remote control port.
