The new FUJIFILM GFX ETERNA is is a well thought out camera I watched the video presentation from Fuji and thought it was a very interesting contender for the cinematic range of professional cameras.
Feature | Why it’s promising / what it enables |
---|---|
Large-Format / Large Sensor (43.8 × 32.9 mm, ~102 MP) | That’s about 1.7× the area of a typical full-frame sensor. Gives much more control over depth of field, subject isolation, tonality and dynamic range. Good for cinematic “look” and finer detail especially in wide shots. |
Multiple recording formats + flexibility of crops | “Open Gate” 4:3, full GF format, 35 mm / anamorphic / Super 35. This gives a lot of lens choice and framing options. Helps adapt to different storytelling styles. |
Dual Base ISO (800 / 3200) | Helps keep noise controlled in both darker and brighter lighting conditions. Useful for variable lighting, quick setups. |
Built-in Variable Electronic ND filter (2-7 stops) | That’s a big win for on-set flexibility and smoother exposure control when light changes. Less dependency on external NDs, faster adjusting. |
Strong color science / film simulations + LUTs | Fuji has a legacy with film stock, and the ETERNA 55 brings that into cinema: lots of film simulations + LUTs (ETERNA, etc), plus log options (F-Log2 / F-Log2 C) for grading. Helps creative control, and gives “look” in camera or as baseline. |
High resolutions & frame rates | Capable of DCI 8K / 30fps, 4K open gate 4:3 at 48fps, Super 35, etc. |
Connectivity & pro workflows | Considered inputs/outputs (12G-SDI etc), support for remote control / network workflows. |
