At £99 the Tom Tom car cradle is expensive but if you look closely at the picture above you will notice the iPhone has no protection. I went into the Buchanan St. Apple store with the sole intention of purchasing a Tom Tom car adaptor but had the sense to ask if the cradle could take my iPhone with my protective plastic skin. Stupidly Tom Tom have designed their cradle to fit the iPhone only ! This is a major design fault in my opinion as most of us have a tight fitting snug skin on the iPhone as in my opinion it’s far to easy to drop without an external rubberised skin.
But all the skins are different sizes! All the iphones are the same…. Makes sense to me. And for the recor, mine’s naked – someone spent ages trying to get the iphone to look the way it does, and to cram as much functionality into as little volume as possible. Why stick a fat, bulky, ugly rubber case on it? You bought it to use it – don’t sweat it!
Ahh good old Dougie arrives to address the balance, hows the trip I hope all is well.
Dougie it would only have taken Tom Tom a small addition to the cradle design to have abled it to work with some skins !
I genuinely find the bare iPhone very easy to slip out of your hand and the rubberised skin a blessing.
Well you know how it goes Philip – someone’s got to play Devil’s Advocate from time to time. Trip’s going really well. Heading back out to the Torres Del Paine park tomorrow in the hope that the weather might be a bit more conductive to some good photos over Christmas….
Good catch, I was thinking of getting the cradle but always had a coat on my iPhone. How difficult would it have been to design it like every other cradle on the market? Guess I’ll wait for Mk2 which might have an FM transmitter as well!
Thanks for the informative posts during 2009.
Merry Xmas!
