Received an email from Kodak last week telling me their new “cine” camera is almost available in the USA, the bad news was the price of $5,495, yes you read it five and a half thousand dollars !

KODAK…Beginning December 4, 2023, limited quantities of the KODAK Super 8 Camera will be available to U.S. customers. Availability outside the U.S. will be announced at a later date.

If you are interested in purchasing a camera once it is available in your country, you must sign up on Kodak’s NEW camera reservation list by November 28, 2023, opting in to communications from third-party retailers authorized by Kodak.

By completing the new reservation form by the deadline, you will maintain your position from the previous list.

So here is how it goes, you insert a Super 8mm cartridge with film inside, produce your 3.5 minutes of film and send it off to Kodak to develop. You get an email to say it’s ready and then download your footage onto your computer. No price of how much the extra film cartridges will cost.

My honest opinion is that five & a half thousand dollars is way too expensive for what you get, you can purchase a Sony FX6 cheaper than this Kodak “cine” camera.

  1. After almost 8 years an announcement that the camera might be ready next year. Too little, too late, too expensive. I bet processing and telecine of 3 1/2 min film carts will be $99.99.

I thought the original idea was to allow film makers an entry level real film experience. Much better to invest in a used original Black Magic Cinema Camera for better results and shooting experience.

  2. Have a Canon 814E – didn’t realise it may be worth a small fortune. 😉
