Coming during December “JVC GY-HM650”

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

“Another JVC”, yes and this time I am excited, JVC have gone way beyond any other manufacturer bringing out firmware upgrades for the 600 series camcorder, admittedly the 1080 25p running in interlace mode was a necessary fix but the reduction in overall picture noise is exciting.

One feature I have omitted to mention is the new in-camera flash band compensation, this will be a major bonus to both news and event videography, I look forward to putting this through its paces.

It is un-presidented the lengths JVC have gone and going to, to make sure the 600/650 is prefect for the end user both broadcasters and professionals alike.

I have the 600 footage to compare, especially noise, I was more than happy with my 600 so any improvement to the overall noise will in my books be very welcome.

The 650 brings some unique features to the table…uploading recorded footage direct to a FTP server, recording two codecs at the same time, WI-FI out direct to your iPad.

Many unanswered questions like “If I send the MPEG-4 footage to a server for cutting, can I then transpose the higher quality MPEG-2 footage for the MPEG-4 footage ?”

Will the 35Mbps footage be suitable for broadcast news work ?

What extra quality will I gain running an external recorder off the HD-SDI socket ?

The GY-HM600 camcorder has more than proved itself to me so far as a cracking run and gun camcorder so I really look forward to getting it’s big brother fairly soon to see the new FW implemented and the new features that only the 650 can offer.

Genustech Eclipse Variable ND Fader 77mm (8 stops)

Categories: Miscellaneous No Comments

Arriving at the beginning of November the new 8 stop variable ND filter from Genustech. I was embargoed till the 29th of November but decided to wait till the new look blog was in place.

The filter cuts the light down from 2-8 stops which can be very useful in both photography and video. The Sony FS100 would be a prime candidate using this filter.

As you can see from my test bench the dolly’s face does not change colour from 2 to 8 stops, nor any of the colours on the rendition chart. The only thing that does change is the polarisation as you would expect, this is clearly seen on the reflection on +2 stops and little to no reflection at +8 stops.

It’s clear than Genustech have been working hard to achieve such a high quality no colour change ND fader, price and availability to follow.

Shape C300 RIG £999

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

The Shape C300 RIG is made in Canada and is one of the better made rigs I have come across. Pressing the red buttons on the handle allow you to re-position the handles for a more comfortable position.

The hands-free TELESCOPIC SUPPORT ARM ROD BLOC includes a ROD BLOC and a camera mount bracket with a 4″ MULTIFUNCTION SHOE that provides a large surface contact area. Increased stability, comfort and maneuverability are provided to the camera support using the TELESCOPIC SUPPORT ARM ROD BLOC which can be easily attached to the shoulder rig via the ROD BLOC.

If you use the Shape RIG with a Canon C300 you will need to use the special C300 plate which bolts onto the C300 as shown above, this makes it far easier to screw the rig baseplate onto the C300.

The Shape RIG is well thought out with a padded shoulder pad, body brace (support arm) for extra stability and the swivel handles. Like all rigs you are adding extra weight to your camcorder almost doubling up on the weight of the camera again so think carefully when buying one.

NOTE : The Canon C300, matte box and Zacuto EVF are not included in the price of £999.

If you buy one from H Preston Media tell them you saw this on HD Warrior and John will give you a further £20 off the rig !
