  1. Great review Philip!
It’s a great camera, but for indy filmmakers like me it seems overpriced for what you get.
I don’t think that the image from C300 is 2x better then Fs-100 or even Af-101. Still 8bit and no 50p 1080 for that money?! Crazy!
The form factor is great but with xlr and monitor it seems that you loose a lot of advantage.
    Waiting for Panasonic/Sony move 😉
    Thanks for you work!

  2. Thanks Philip for a great user review.
It’s brilliant that the C300 takes EF-S lenses. I agree with you about the EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS. As Canon unfortunately chose not to update the new EF 24-70mm with IS, this lens is still the fastest, widest, IS zoom lens
that Canon make. IS is relatively quiet. (unlike the EF70-200 f4 IS.)
The only thing I don’t like is the manual focus ring isn’t as smooth as an L lens.
I also agree with you about DOF breathing space. Clean high ISO on the C300 makes it possible in dimly lit situations to simply up the gain and choose an aperture that allows for deeper depth of field.
The LCD/ Audio module doesn’t bother me as it is part of the design and manufactured as such.
Finally no more consumer grade HDMI 3rd party add-ons just to get 50MB/s!

  3. No one has ever mentioned the fan noise. Even when its very low it matters to me so thanks a lot for mentioning it.

  4. Thoughtful design, with good ergonomics, though I bet you’ll press that joystick sometimes instead of the record button! Old habits die hard.
I couldn’t see any noise in the +30dB shot – incredible.

  5. Hi Philip!

So far I’ve been a silent reader of your blog, but now I would like to thank you for the effort you put in your interesting and insightful reviews!

I really like this Camera, the C300. Yes, it is very pricey, and I will wait a bit, before purchase, hoping that the price will still come down a little bit.

But what makes this camera worthy is, that you have everything inside this body that you need, to shoot highquality video. Without the hassle of having a Frankenstein-like rig equipped with a thousand assessories. This (NDs, 50Mbits, 422, control over lenses, IS, stripdown form to fit in an small underwaterhousing) is what makes me think of choosing this camera over all the others.

Thanks again and keep on with your great blog!
