NEW Panasonic S5 £2000 with lens

Categories: Miscellaneous 3 Comments

Panasonic is delighted to announce the LUMIX S5, a new hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera that achieves excellent performance in both video and photo as well as exceptional flexibility for serious videographers and photographers.

4K 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording
4:2:2 10-bit 60p HDMI output Updated.
Improved AF system Dual IS
Dual Native ISO4K Anamorphic video (4:3)
Free Angle LCD In-camera frame markers for different aspect ratiosVertical video playback

The S5 will be available from the end of September for £1,799.99 for body only, or £1,999.99 for the kit which includes the LUMIX S Series 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens. From today until 30th September, Panasonic LUMIX UK are also running a pre-order launch offer of a complimentary DMW-XLR1 microphone adaptor or Sigma 45mm f2.8 lens by redemption*1

At the heart of the camera, the LUMIX S5 contains a 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that boasts wide dynamic range and high sensitivity performance. The LUMIX S5 further realises a maximum ISO 51200 of crystal-clear high sensitivity video with the adoption of the Dual Native ISO technology.

The LUMIX S5 is the smallest and lightest S Series camera to date, measuring only 132.6 x 97.1 x 81.9 mm (approx) and with a body-only weight of 630g. This makes the S5 incredibly portable and easy to use for extended handheld shooting.

HDW : Stupidly Panasonic have opted for a Micro HDMI on this camera…BAD CHOICE. This is when you know your designers DO NOT use the camera in a professional environment.

As a pioneer of hybrid mirrorless cameras, Panasonic LUMIX has the largest line-upof cameras that record 4K 10-bit video*2. The latest member of the family, the LUMIX S5, is capable of 4K 60p/50p 4:2:0 10-bit, and 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording. It is also capable of 4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output. For 4K 30p/25p 4:2:0 8-bit internal recording, there is no time limitation as Panasonic’s exceptional heat dispersion technology enables stable and continuous video recording.

New Sony FX6 tentative price of $7000

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

I find it strange that Sony are announcing the FX6 but without any specs, obviously its almost IBC time so we will be getting updates very soon at the virtual IBC.

Rumours so far…Sony PXW-FX6 is the successor to the hugely popular PXW-FS5. The new full frame PXW-FX6 follows the design from PXW-FS5 with a light weight camera body and at the same time gets a thing or two from the PXW-FX9. The body color will be the same as FX9 and they will share the same sensor.

The new FX6 will record up to 3840×2160 at 30fps and in 1920×1080 up to 120fps. Recording media is SDXC and 10-bit 4:2:2 LongGOP XAVC-L codec. As the same sensor as the FX9 is used the hybrid auto focus system will be the same. Raw output for 3840×2160 up to 60fps is provided from the SDI output.
Both S-Cinetone and S-log3 as recording gamma options are included but there’s no real LUT support but a simple view assist.

The camera body will be updated with better weather sealing and both the rear EVF (An optional plug in one) and LCD screen will have a boost in resolution. Also the mount and frame is more robust to handle heavier full frame lenses.

Sony Pre Press launch…Sony today announced the launch of Cinema Line, a series of new camera products for content creators which will bring together Sony’s expertise in image quality, attention to detail, technology and passion in digital cinema.

Cinema Line will deliver not only the coveted cinematographic look cultivated through extensive experience in digital cinema production, but also the enhanced operability and reliability that meet discerning creators’ various needs. The new series will extend beyond basic cinema camera and professional camcorder form factors.

In 2000, Sony released the ground-breaking HDW-F900. The HDW-F900 marked the beginning of digital cinema history as the world’s first 24p digital cinema camera.  VENICE and other products followed in response to countless dialogues with cinematographers and image creators.

Existing products in the Sony range will form part of the Cinema Line including VENICE and FX9. VENICE has become a first choice for digital movie production, and the FX9 has an outstanding track record in documentary production. The next step is a new model that will appeal to a wide spectrum of visual creators. Sony will be releasing and shipping this next addition to the range, the FX6 camera by the end of 2020.

YouTube taking the P when it comes to Gmail accounts

Categories: Miscellaneous No Comments

When you have a Mac the last thing you need is another email account till you use YouTube.

My only Gmail account has now been embedded into my upload via FCPX and makes things very confusing. I have 2 YouTube accounts one for HD Warrior and one for One Roving Cook. Needless to say the email account YouTube has decided when things changed to Google plus was my One Roving Cook account, not appropriate for HD Warrior.

It makes auto uploading out of FCPX a nightmare so I have to upload manually. Why do organisations like Google assume I wanted my Gmail account as my default for YouTube. I have now created a Gmail account for HD Warrior just in case someone at Google or YouTube can get me out of this mess.

As for YouTube itself it’s far too complicated, changing the banner artwork is a nightmare. Even help videos about YouTube can and usually are out of date. One of the better YouTube tutorial channels is by David Walsh.

Creators Best Friend a new £9.99 app that will save bags of time in FCPX and YouTube

Categories: Miscellaneous No Comments

Who remembers creating a DVD in FCP, those good old chapter markers gave you definitive jump points within your DVD and were very accurate.

YouTube has a great feature called Video Chapters that allows creators to break up their videos into named chapters where Video Chapters were recently added to an already published video.

With this new app the easiest way to get these chapters is to add orange chapter markers to your Final Cut Pro X project, then use Creator’s Best Friend to make a list of timestamps and chapter titles for you.

I was given a chance to try this app out before it went to market and I added chapters to my video review on YouTube about the Panasonic X2000.

The beauty of this app is the ability to post produce your chapters from any video that you have uploaded as long as the video starts at zero on the timeline.

So for instance all you do is add the chapter markers plus wording in FCPX after the video is made and export an XML from the timeline. The app leaves you with the chapters as you can see from my example below but you copy and paste them into the Description part of either YouTube or Vimeo.

A note on Vimeo “Unlike the YouTube version you won’t get the chapters to work on an iPhone, works a dream on an iPad.”

As you can see you can now choose the bits you want to see on YouTube, especially good for Tutorials and Video Reviews.

This app is now available from the Apple Store for the great price of £9.99

Canon R6 Reviewed with footage from Johnnie Behiri

Categories: Miscellaneous 2 Comments

Finally we get an honest review and some long awaited footage from one of these new Canon cameras, the R6.

When you consider Canon started the ball rolling with the Canon 5D Mk2 early in 2009 they have not taken this path to anywhere near its final conclusion.

I have said it about the Canon R5, why would you be the world leader in photography and lenses to produce a camera with video features that no serious film producer can use.

The overheating problem in both these cameras has put the new Canon “R” cameras at the bottom of the video ladder.

Canon R5 pre production model is an exceptional photographic tool.

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

I have been rather harsh with Canon’s R5 as its not just a video tool. This picture from Paul Zizka using a pre production R5 is exceptional.

With its 45MP full frame sensor and exceptional low light capabilities there is a lot more to this camera that I clearly ignored.

Canon R5 “8K at a cost” Price £4200

Categories: Miscellaneous 6 Comments

So we finally have an 8K mirrorless camera with a headphone socket I may add.

Before you rush out and spend your £4000 there are some serious flaws this camera is going to give you from day one.

For UK customers 8K 25P creates a lot of heat (There is no fan in this camera) and as the heat builds up in the camera you will get short recording times even as low as 15 minutes or less.

No one understands why Canon decided to go down this route as a filmmakers we need equipment we can rely on.

It seems to me Canon wanted to have the first interchangeable mirrorless camera filming in 8K to jump ahead of the competition but with no fan to cool things down have they jumped in too soon.

You have to question why Canon did not look at the Panasonic S1H recording at 4K and ask themselves why Panasonic needed a fan in their camera.

Canon just issued an official statement regarding the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 overheating during video recording. The company says they used a magnesium alloy body and “overheat control” for better heat management. Canon didn’t want to include a fan to keep the body compact and weather-sealed.  The EOS R5 can only record up to 20 minutes in 8K and up to 15 minutes in 4K 120fps. After that, the camera needs up to 20 minutes to recover before starting to record again.

HDW…We can safely say the R5 won’t be finding itself on any blockbuster studio set anytime soon with that crippling 20 minute wait between takes.
