Was not expecting this but when I upgraded to Aperture 3 I discovered to my surprise that it needs to upgrade all your thumbnails in your library which in my case took over 5 hours to complete. I started upgrading at 1pm and did not see the new updated programme till 6.15pm…just over 5 hours later. I think Apple should give you some warning about this as this could be critical to some photographers not being able to use Aperture for such a length of time. In previous versions this was done under the hood….YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED…this is an overnight upgrade !

Citing a source who has been “amazingly accurate”, Boy Genius Report issued a brief note today claiming that Apple’s much-rumored tablet will be announced in January and will carry a 7-inch screen. Most rumors have pointed to a 10-inch screen for the tablet, and while the source does not rule out the possibility of such a model, they can only confirm the existence of the 7-inch model.

It has been widely reported recently that the size of the tablet is 10″, but there was also talk about a 7″ model. Our connect said there is 100% a 7″ Apple tablet, to be announced in January, and whether this is in addition to a 10″ model, they don’t know.

Claims of the smaller screen size, which were sporadic over the past year, appear to be picking up steam in recent weeks, led by speculation that a severe shortage of the screens could only be the result of Apple snapping up supplies.

iTabletPro-web-V3I hear from the grapevine good old Steve Jobbs is looking for a good excuse to launch a tablet, there is no better excuse than to add touch and gestures and to be able to control Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Soundtrack Pro. You could even use it with Photoshop as a graphics tablet…pen included. Mr Jobbs now I have given you that great idea can I have one rather than royalties !  PS. The chap who produced this wonderful concept iTabletPro may also lay claim to a free tablet.

Late last week, 9 to 5 Mac noted that a number of users have reported a Mac OS X Snow Leopard bug apparently related to Guest accounts that is resulting in a complete loss of user data. The problem appears to manifest itself on machines which had the Guest account option enabled under Leopard and were subsequently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Users booting their machines have reported that upon start-up, they have been logged into the Guest account. Upon switching to their regular account, the affected users have been finding all of their user data missing and unrecoverable except from a backup.

Further investigation revealed initial reports of the problem in early September, soon after Snow Leopard’s launch.

This could be due to a bug in how guest accounts are managed since data and settings are deleted from these accounts upon logout, but also could be from some corruption in the guest account. So far, it does not seem to be a widespread problem.

If this happens to you, immediately restore using your latest Time Machine backup (or other full system backup), and then go to the Accounts system preferences and disable log-in on the guest account.

One suggestion for preventing data deletion is for users who had Guest accounts enabled under Leopard and then upgraded to Snow Leopard to disable the Guest account and then reenable it. This results in fresh Guest account settings created under Snow Leopard, reportedly eliminating the problem.

Several threads on the issue have popped up on Apple’s support forums, but Apple has yet to make an official acknowledgement of the problem.

Snow-Leopard-Review

I have had to postpone my review of Snow Leopard because I intend using it with Final Cut Pro 7 running on a MacPro and ingesting with an AJA io HD. The problem is that AJA as yet running into week 7 do not have the drivers for FCP-7/Snow Leopard.

I do however have Snow Leopard running on two iMacs and it works fine in fact I can tell you that my iMac which is a later model is more responsive but I do not have FCP-7 on this machine so I can’t judge using it in a professional editing environment .

For those of us using the Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P eSATA card and a DP500 Sonnet have posted the following message. “Snow Leopard compatible (32bit). Advanced users note that this card is not yet compatible in full 64-bit boot. Snow Leopard default boots in 32-bit mode, except in an Xserve.”

MacBook Pro users have had problems using Snow Leopard as it seems to affect the Sony SxS drivers.

Apple Concept TabletA source has told HD Warrior that Apple are going to announce something big this coming Wednesday the 9th of September 09. Some people are predicting the well overdue Apple tablet. I for one hope this is the case and also hope that Apple give us the ability to have video inputs as well as outputs allowing such a machine to be used for monitoring or prompting. Remember this is only a guess…keep your eyes on the Apple website at about 7pm GMT for an announcement hopefully from Steve Jobs himself.
