NEW EOS Canon C70…£4,799

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

Just announced the new Canon C7. The EOS C70 is a new generation RF Mount Cinema EOS System camera featuring Canon’s 4K Super 35mm DGO sensor. With 4K 120P Slow Motion, High Dynamic Range and Dual Pixel CMOS AF in a compact body, it takes the RF System into a brand new era.

The EOS C70 features a Super35 sensor using Canon’s next-generation Dual Gain Output (DGO) technology. The DGO sensor reads each pixel at two different gain levels, with one prioritizing saturation and highlight protection and the other suppressing noise in the shadows.

When combined, Canon claims the camera can deliver 16+ stops of dynamic range at up to DCI 4K/60p or 2K/120p (using a Super16 crop). It can also capture 4K/120p and 2K/180p without extended dynamic range. Recording choices include both All-I and intra-frame options using Canon’s XF-AVC or MP4 (H.265) codecs.

Canon admits to overheating problems, new firmware will help but not fix the problem.

Categories: Miscellaneous 3 Comments

As usual Johnnie Behiri from Cine D gets to the point and interviews Canon’s Product Manager Mr Katsuyuki Nagai-san asking him why the Canon R5’s overheat.

Here is a snippet of his interview with a link to the whole interview down below.

Johnnie – CineD: Both cameras suffered from overheating issues in video recording and more than that, long recovery times. By introducing the latest firmware update, it seems as if Canon is trying to overcome some of those issues by allowing longer recording and shorter recovery waiting times (until the camera can film again). What exactly is causing those cameras to overheat and what’s the new FW doing in order to help here?

Katsuyuki Nagai-san – Canon: I think we should look at the fundamentals of the whole topic to give a better perspective. The cameras feature cutting edge features squeezed into compact bodies designed to offer weather resistance.

This is where we come to the first of the two governing factors that affect the cameras when it comes to overheating. Holding a very warm object for an extended period has the potential to result in what is known as low temperature burns. Secondary is to protect the internal components of the camera from the overheating. We limit how hot the external body of the camera can get to protect users, which is one of the causes of overheat shutdown. Some heat management must also be applied to ensure the camera continues to operate.

HDW : As I have pointed out before on this blog. Why if you know you are going to limit this camera by heat did Canon not design an internal fan the same as Panasonic did with the S1H.

I think its shocking that Canon produced this camera knowing its vastly reduced limitations using 4K and 8K due to heat when the answer was available via their competitors using an internal fan.

UPDATE with latest firmware installed : The new firmware allows the camera to record 20 minutes in one go. The recovery time is 10 minutes and then you will be able to record for another 10 minutes. This “recording/pausing” dance can continue for rather a long time with different recording/pausing times on each circle.

BBC Scotland NOT DOING THEIR JOB during the 2nd wave of this Pandemic

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

This should not be a decision for the BBC to take. After the BBC admitting daily viewing figures of 280,000 on BBC One Scotland the people of Scotland deserve to see and hear what our elected leader has to report whenever she decides to speak to them. If anything is a good reason for daily briefings it’s a pandemic! It is not a political issue as the First Minister has repeatedly made clear, despite the efforts of others including many so-called journalists.

There is no doubt this poor decision has been constructed by the top brass in BBC London, again.

The Scottish Government Covid-19 Briefings have been and still are an essential tool in dealing with this public health crisis, used to convey important information to the people of Scotland. To deny that is to put the country at a serious risk.

We have no control over broadcasting rights and no national media and not everyone has access to internet. The BBC are causing an issue where the only one should be that of public health.

Panasonic S5 could have had a full size HDMI

Categories: Miscellaneous 3 Comments

Its the new normal today with designers, everything must be in a straight line therefore sacrificing a much needed full size HDMI socket on the new Panasonic S5.

I have now proven via Photoshop that a full size HDMI socket could have been an option.

A micro HDMI is a complete waste of time and has proven itself on many shoots how fragile it is.

Panasonic broke the mould with the GH5 using a full size HDMI and hey presto a few professional cameras down the line the mould is now broken.

Micro HDMI is not a professional connector !!!

NEW Panasonic S5 £2000 with lens

Categories: Miscellaneous 3 Comments

Panasonic is delighted to announce the LUMIX S5, a new hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera that achieves excellent performance in both video and photo as well as exceptional flexibility for serious videographers and photographers.

4K 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording
4:2:2 10-bit 60p HDMI output Updated.
Improved AF system Dual IS
Dual Native ISO4K Anamorphic video (4:3)
Free Angle LCD In-camera frame markers for different aspect ratiosVertical video playback

The S5 will be available from the end of September for £1,799.99 for body only, or £1,999.99 for the kit which includes the LUMIX S Series 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens. From today until 30th September, Panasonic LUMIX UK are also running a pre-order launch offer of a complimentary DMW-XLR1 microphone adaptor or Sigma 45mm f2.8 lens by redemption*1

At the heart of the camera, the LUMIX S5 contains a 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that boasts wide dynamic range and high sensitivity performance. The LUMIX S5 further realises a maximum ISO 51200 of crystal-clear high sensitivity video with the adoption of the Dual Native ISO technology.

The LUMIX S5 is the smallest and lightest S Series camera to date, measuring only 132.6 x 97.1 x 81.9 mm (approx) and with a body-only weight of 630g. This makes the S5 incredibly portable and easy to use for extended handheld shooting.

HDW : Stupidly Panasonic have opted for a Micro HDMI on this camera…BAD CHOICE. This is when you know your designers DO NOT use the camera in a professional environment.

As a pioneer of hybrid mirrorless cameras, Panasonic LUMIX has the largest line-upof cameras that record 4K 10-bit video*2. The latest member of the family, the LUMIX S5, is capable of 4K 60p/50p 4:2:0 10-bit, and 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording. It is also capable of 4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output. For 4K 30p/25p 4:2:0 8-bit internal recording, there is no time limitation as Panasonic’s exceptional heat dispersion technology enables stable and continuous video recording.

New Sony FX6 tentative price of $7000

Categories: Miscellaneous 1 Comment

I find it strange that Sony are announcing the FX6 but without any specs, obviously its almost IBC time so we will be getting updates very soon at the virtual IBC.

Rumours so far…Sony PXW-FX6 is the successor to the hugely popular PXW-FS5. The new full frame PXW-FX6 follows the design from PXW-FS5 with a light weight camera body and at the same time gets a thing or two from the PXW-FX9. The body color will be the same as FX9 and they will share the same sensor.

The new FX6 will record up to 3840×2160 at 30fps and in 1920×1080 up to 120fps. Recording media is SDXC and 10-bit 4:2:2 LongGOP XAVC-L codec. As the same sensor as the FX9 is used the hybrid auto focus system will be the same. Raw output for 3840×2160 up to 60fps is provided from the SDI output.
Both S-Cinetone and S-log3 as recording gamma options are included but there’s no real LUT support but a simple view assist.

The camera body will be updated with better weather sealing and both the rear EVF (An optional plug in one) and LCD screen will have a boost in resolution. Also the mount and frame is more robust to handle heavier full frame lenses.

Sony Pre Press launch…Sony today announced the launch of Cinema Line, a series of new camera products for content creators which will bring together Sony’s expertise in image quality, attention to detail, technology and passion in digital cinema.

Cinema Line will deliver not only the coveted cinematographic look cultivated through extensive experience in digital cinema production, but also the enhanced operability and reliability that meet discerning creators’ various needs. The new series will extend beyond basic cinema camera and professional camcorder form factors.

In 2000, Sony released the ground-breaking HDW-F900. The HDW-F900 marked the beginning of digital cinema history as the world’s first 24p digital cinema camera.  VENICE and other products followed in response to countless dialogues with cinematographers and image creators.

Existing products in the Sony range will form part of the Cinema Line including VENICE and FX9. VENICE has become a first choice for digital movie production, and the FX9 has an outstanding track record in documentary production. The next step is a new model that will appeal to a wide spectrum of visual creators. Sony will be releasing and shipping this next addition to the range, the FX6 camera by the end of 2020.
