Ikegami 8K on its way from Japan

Ikegami are charging ahead with 8K 7680×4320 which is 16x bigger than HD. Having seen 8K for myself it produces pictures to die for. If you think 4K is good wait till you see 8K. Just when we have passed “Back to the Future Day” no one predicted 8K so soon.

Ikegami has announced the completion of the world’s first 8K OB production vehicle. The new vehicle is designed to operate as a complete mobile 8K broadcast production facility capable of producing television of unsurpassed picture quality, complete with 22.2 channel surround sound.

In March 2015, Ikegami introduced its SHK-810 fourth-generation 8K television camera that was developed in co-operation with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). This is about one tenth the size and weight of Ikegami’s first-generation 8K camera and offers significantly improved operability. The company’s efforts to develop 8K broadcast production equipment have focused on achieving extremely high resolution combined with Ikegami’s proven ability to deliver very wide dynamic image processing. Ikegami also has long experience in producing mobile television production trucks, having produced more than 800 OB vehicles.

In Japan, the road map for 8K broadcasting announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications specifies that trial broadcast transmissions will be conducted in 2016. Regular 8K broadcast services are planned to begin in 2018.

Many elements of 8K television production infrastructure are much larger in size, power consumption and number of cables than their HDTV equivalent. This is because 8K broadcast production captures 16 times more image information than HDTV. Organising an 8K OB vehicle is therefore much more challenging than designing and producing traditional OB vehicles.

The 8K OB vehicle produced by Ikegami delivers extremely high quality and high reliability in a compact size. The vehicle’s specifications allow operation not only in Japan but worldwide so it can be operated for global sporting events such as the Olympic Games. It can be expanded to accommodate additional equipment as and when required.

The 8K OB vehicle was delivered to NHK in September 2015. Its role will be to allow television audiences to experience the full reality of live events from wherever they choose to view.

    Oh my …. the future is coming in the form of a shoulder mounted camera?

    HDW : Mark there is a lot of extra pixels to carry about in fact 16x more than HD !

    Philip : ALL the video cameras should be shoulder mounted, who invented the handycam should be arrested for causing pain , suffering , frustration and unnecessary arm injuries to people , plus a whole generation of shaky footage. the stabilization must be in the lens, with floating elements in a gimbal (like sony did) so we can get rid of those monsters with a bionic arm called steadicam too. And all the frankenrigs should be illegal for evident illogical stupidity.

    ikegami cameras (they call them “hand-held”, imagine that LOL) . are well balanced, very well balanced, I had the pleasure to put one on my shoulder for 20 minutes and I didn’t feel a thing. They are that good. But I don’t get the short handle. It looks like it’s short by “design” , for some reason. One can and will get used to it of course, but WHY???? it’s a beautiful design… put a decent full size handle, no?

    I’m interested in what the sensor size is …. And single or three chip? The latest high end Sony cameras for 4K outside broadcast use (Sony 4300 2/3 inch) are three chip 2/3″, but even 4K is stretching 2/3″ in respect of diffraction effects. And because that is down to physical limits imposed by the wavelength of light, “laws of physics” issues are more difficult to solve than others. Well, it can be done – by using physically larger components. But 2/3″ 8K…..?

    Actually, looking more closely at the picture, I may be able to answer my own question. The lens seems to say “Fujinon 19-90″, which would seem to imply s35?

    And really, that brings up another question. That lens is less than a 5x zoom – way less than we’re used to on basic 2/3” cameras. Will it be feasible to have 14x zoom lenses on 8K cameras without them being prohibitively big, heavy and expensive?

    I have seen 8K in theatre conditions (the 2012 Olympic tests) and it’s impressive indeed. But from memory it’s a completely different style of television. Wide shots work – close ups don’t, and unless you go for that sort of theatre experience I’m not sure I see the point. I can see a point to 8K for specialist applications (not just closed circuit to theatres, but industrial, medical, military etc as well) – but for standard broadcast…..?

    Jiri Vrozina : and what that supposed to mean? this Ikegami delivers (on paper) better footage than a GH4 , but the GH4 takes better footage than any camera ever made as of today. The problem is that the video industry has been based on intentional restrictions since VHS. They measure every little detail to make sure that you can produce up to a certain level based on the cost of the camera. For more or even a little more you had to spend thousands more. Come on, we saw that over and over. At least now we see something actually better than a stupid DSLR because it was embarrassing to say the least: A D90 (shooting video by mistake) destroying years and years of BS and limitations in ONE DAY. LOL
